The Region
Winemaker Scipione ‘Luca’ Giuliani works across a number of areas within Italy to create the wines for his Da Luca range, depending on the style he is looking to make. Italy is a long, thin country with great climatic differences between, for example, the Alpine region of Alto Adige bordering Austria in the far north and the hot, sun drenched island of Sicily off Italy’s southernmost tip.
In addition to relatively recent plantings of international grapes such as Chardonnay and Merlot, Italy also has a vast array of quality indigenous (native) grape varietals, many of which are still only found in a given area. Luca makes the most of these natural advantages to give his wines their unique character and individuality, producing for example an elegant Pinot Grigio from the cooler Friuli region of northern Italy and a rich, fruity, full-bodied Primitivo Merlot blend from Puglia in the deep South.
